Mobile Maintenance Rail Fleet – Maintainer / Fitter
Location: Basingstoke and other locations, including Paddock Wood and Horsham, c2 hour radius travel (travel time paid for to locations apart from the base location of Basingstoke.
Salary & Benefits
- Basic Salary: £48,500 per annum
- Hours: 160 hours over a 4-week cycle (10 days on 4 days off pattern)
- Overtime: Paid for all hours above rostered hours
- Travel time: Paid for to all locations apart from Basingstoke, which is the base location.
- Overtime Rates:
- Flat rate – weekdays
- Double time – Sundays & Bank Holidays
- Day in lieu for Bank Holidays worked
- Company Van & Fuel Card
- Pension: 5% employer contribution
- Holidays: 25 days + 8 Bank Holidays
- Tools, PPE & Uniform: Fully provided
- Training & Development: Full technical, safety, and rail competence training provided
About the Role:
We are recruiting for an experienced Mobile Mechanical Maintainer / Fitter to work on a fleet of Mobile Maintenance Trains (MMTs), primarily based at Basingstoke, with travel to other locations in the South, such as Paddock Wood and Horsham.
This is a hands-on mechanical engineering role focused on planned, preventative, and corrective maintenance of highly specialised rail-mounted machinery. The Mobile Maintenance Trains are self-contained mobile workshops used for rail infrastructure maintenance and incorporate complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and computer-controlled systems.
The role offers strong technical variety while remaining day-based and depot-led, with travel to a reasonable radius from the Home Depot.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out planned maintenance, servicing, inspections, and repairs on Mobile Maintenance Trains
- Fault-find and repair mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
- Work with Vehicle Maintenance Instructions and asset management systems to accurately record work completed
- Perform maintenance on engines, compressors, power packs, lifting equipment, and onboard tooling
- Maintain and inspect hydraulic systems, including pumps, actuators, hoses, and valves
- Carry out functional testing and commissioning following maintenance activities
- Support audits of onboard tools, spares, and equipment
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organised working environment
- Ensure all work is completed in line with health & safety, rail standards, and company procedures
- Provide technical support to night teams when required
- Assist with occasional travel to other stabling locations within the South
What You’ll Be Working On
- Mobile Maintenance Trains operating on the UK mainline rail network
- Heavy mechanical assemblies
- Hydraulic and pneumatic power systems
- Electrical control panels, lighting systems, and onboard diagnostics
- Computer-based maintenance records, spreadsheets, and timesheet systems
Essential Requirements
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Maintenance Engineering
- Strong mechanical fault-finding and repair experience
- Comfortable working with hydraulic and pneumatic systems
- IT-literate (spreadsheets, digital timesheets, maintenance systems)
- Full UK Driving Licence (essential)
- Able to pass a rail medical and drug & alcohol screening
- Good understanding of health & safety and safe systems of work
Desirable
- Rail, heavy plant, or industrial maintenance experience
- Ex-Forces background (REME, RAF, Marine Engineers, etc.)
- PTS (training provided if required)

- Engineers may be required to travel up to a 2-hour radius from the Basingstoke depot
